Safety & Quality Manager – Rolling Stock

Lead safety and quality uplift across Melbourne’s iconic tram network

Yarra Trams operates the world’s largest tram network, and we’re on a journey to modernise how safety and quality are managed across our Rolling Stock operations. We’re looking for an experienced leader who can move beyond compliance—someone who can influence culture, partner with technical teams, and lift operational capability.

The Role

As Safety & Quality Manager – Rolling Stock, you’ll lead a specialist team and work closely with engineering, maintenance, suppliers and operational leaders. You’ll ensure our Safety Management System (SMS) and Quality Management System (QMS) are practical, effective and embedded into everyday decision‑making.

This role will suit someone who thrives in a safety‑critical environment and enjoys balancing governance with pragmatic, operational problem‑solving.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Rolling Stock SMS and QMS
  • Drive safety and quality assurance activities (audits, investigations, inspections)
  • Partner with operational leaders to improve performance and assurance outcomes
  • Set and maintain quality standards for maintenance and refurbishment
  • Manage non‑conformance, root cause analysis and CAPA
  • Oversee supplier and contractor safety and quality programs
  • Ensure strong governance, reporting, documentation and CMMS integrity (e.g. Maximo)
  • Provide clear insights to support effective leadership decisions

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Safety, Engineering, Quality or related field
  • Experience in rail, transport, infrastructure, energy, defence or similar
  • Strong knowledge of SMS/QMS frameworks and operational assurance
  • Skilled in audits, investigations, risk and quality management
  • Confident people leader able to influence at all levels
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement capability
  • Experience with CMMS/governance systems

Why Join Us?

  • High influence across engineering, maintenance and supplier networks
  • Opportunity to uplift systems, culture and operational maturity
  • A values‑driven organisation committed to continuous improvement
  • The chance to make a visible impact on the safety and reliability of Melbourne’s tram network
