Head of Engineering, Electrical Systems
Role Purpose

Actively participating in engineering management initiatives with a positive, constructive, and collaborative approach.
- Serving as a high-level specialist in your field.
- Demonstrating substantial technical proficiency as a senior practitioner in engineering management.
- Acting as a senior interface for internal and external stakeholders, including the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator and the Department of Transport.
This role is critical in ensuring the continued safety, efficiency, and innovation of Yarra Trams' engineering operations.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the Engineering Design Authority for the Electrical Engineering discipline, ensuring technical integrity and compliance.
- Provide strategic and tactical leadership to develop and retain electrical engineering expertise within Yarra Trams.
- Act as the Professional Head of Electrical Engineering, leading, mentoring, and inspiring engineers across business functions.
- Develop, implement, and oversee engineering strategies, policies, and procedures to drive continuous improvement and best practices.
- Be the custodian of, and maintain, engineering standards, procedures, guidelines, and associated documentation for the electrical engineering discipline.
- Lead the internal team in preparing specifications, reports, and approvals for engineering changes, ensuring compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical advisory and assurance, approving all electrical system designs and complex changes to uphold safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
Experience & Knowledge
- SFIA Level 6 or higher assessment, demonstrating advanced professional capability.
- Proven leadership experience in engineering functions, with a track record of delivering strategic engineering initiatives, policies, and systems.
- Extensive experience operating at a strategic level, with the ability to influence key stakeholders.
- Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to foster a cooperative and results-driven work environment.
- In-depth knowledge of engineering management systems, design management, and competency frameworks within large, complex organizations.
- Technical expertise in light rail processes, components, and design techniques, along with a deep understanding of systems and reliability engineering concepts.
- Comprehensive understanding of regulatory frameworks, including OHS&E legislative requirements, audit processes, assurance programs, and the development of regulations, codes of practice, and standards.
Qualifications
- Mandatory Washington Accord accredited degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline
- Mandatory (current holding or with a clear pathway for) registration on the Victorian Engineers Register (VER)
- Mandatory (current holding or with a clear pathway for) Chartership status with Engineers Australia or equivalent organisation on the Mutual Recognition Agreement in the Electrical Engineering Area of Competency
